Sea Mauville is a wreck. It's a gigantic hunk of metal sitting out in the middle of nowhere, abandoned by Greater Mauville Holdings and left to waste away in the water. At a glance, it seems like a massive eyesore jutting out of the oceans, but apparently, this heap of scrap is a nature reserve. It's got a "unique ecosystem" or some shit, full of rare plants and brimming with Pokemon.

As far as you're concerned, that sounds like a real good excuse to avoid paying hefty fees for a specialised demolition job, but hey, what do you know? You're not here to evaluate it on its merits as a habitat, you're here to make sure it doesn't collapse. Y'know, check the struts, look for signs of corrosion, verify the structural integrity, that kind of shit. Granted, its not how you want to spend your afternoon, but you owe Navidson a favour, and you've got nothing better going on, so...

"Alright, what exactly am I supposed to be looking for here?"

Not for the first time, a nagging voice in the back of Navy’s mind tells him that he should arrest this man. He’s an agent of the other side, a bad actor, someone who, at the very least, selfishly chooses himself over the greater good.[break][break]
But he gets Navy. They see eye to eye in ways they shouldn’t. Besides, they’d just find another guy to fill his shoes. The next one wouldn’t be as fun. So, Navy figures, he can make a few exceptions.[break][break]
It’s just two lads doing a bit of community service. Two lads and an Armarouge. Elesa, as she has been nicknamed by a Dewford Hipster after a lady-knight from a fantasy book, accompanies them with a stoic air. When ghost Pokemon get too frisky, Elesa blasts them away.[break][break]
“Barnacles. Rust. Bullshit. This place went to hell thirty years ago. It’s just busywork. Kinda hate it falls under Dewford County jurisdiction.” This is the dirty side of being a gym leader. It’s not all glitz, glamour, and wishing champs in the making well. It’s a job. Satisfying, but still labor. You’d never catch an Elite 4 dead doing this sort of work.[break][break]
“Wish we could get Matias Silph down here, doing this. It’d really show he’s a man of the people, you know.” His grin is downright malicious. He hates that man far more than he could ever hate Dan Halen, Shred Zeppelin, or Depp Purple.

"Matias Silph? I don't know who that is, but they sound like a real asshole."

The name sounds familiar, but you can't place it. Silph... Like, the Co? The one that used to make the Scopes back in the day that helped you find ghost Pokemon? You could never afford them yourself, but they were a bit of a fad back in the 90s. You figure they would've gone out of business sometime in the 2000s, so it's surprising to hear that they're still limping around today. Still, you can't really say you much care about whatever trust fund babies are heading the company right now.

With that tangent out of the way, you return to your present task. So, you're looking for barnacles, rust, and bullshit, huh? Sounds simple enough, if a little boring for your tastes. Still, while the Ceruledge is handling the ghosts on the platform, there'll probably be a few ghouls hanging about below the water, too. So, slinging your crowbar over your shoulder, you grab a Pokeball and send out your Basculegion, which emerges and dives down into the water in one singular motion.

"Do me a solid and keep an eye on the water, bud."

"Gyahaha! Very well, then!"

With that angle covered, you take a few steps further along, following after Navy as you lazily glance about the place for signs of wear and tear. That's a little harder than it sounds, given that you're in currently standing on a decades-old decommissioned research station. Feels more like looking for straw in a haystack, so to speak. Still, it gives you plenty of time to think, and even more to talk.

"Why is this even your problem, anyway? Isn't this heap the property of one of those big Mauville megacorporations? Why does the Dewford gym leader have to clean it up?"

Bad news: There’s a multiversal existential threat that makes FERNANDO SILPH and his siblings look like small potatoes. Hard to think about business monopolies or if they’re a bad thing when the world’s about to end.[break][break]
“It’s just how the county lines got drawn up. Much as I wanna be a rebel and not show up, don’t wanna get my pay docked. Plus, I got signed to AQUA.” He wonders if the man even knows what AQUA is. Readings don’t look good, considering his reaction to Matias’s name. “When you get let into a room with all the movers and shakers in the region, somebody still ends up scrubbing the shitter.”[break][break]

Honestly, you don't know anything about half the shit he's talking about, and AQUA is just the second layer of a deep, deep iceberg. Council this, and egghead beauty queens that? Most of it is going over your head. It occurs to you that the inner politics of the League are something of an enigma. Meanwhile, the "good" cop in front of you is tangled deep in this web of lies and corruption, with nothing to do but wriggle and writhe until the Spidops come to devour him.

Still, you're well used to commiserating about the unjust power held by the rich and wealth. You've got about twenty-five years of experience in that department. So, of course, you know just what to say:

"Well, fuck 'em."

Then, after a beat, the topic of conversation turns to you. How has your life been? Well, your life minus all the crime, anyway. Oh, and he probably doesn't want to hear about any of the boring shit, like dealing with the asbestos in your apartment. That cuts out about ninety-five percent of the past few months, but at the very least, you've still got a single buoy to cling to in this conversation.

"Oh, y'know, the usual." You begin, an obviously sly smile on your face. "Went to a swamp, discovered a new subspecies of Ursaluna, found an alien encampment, fell in love, created art, got beat up, and rode a spaceship. Oh. That. It makes an odd amount of sense that Mr. Zeppelin would end up involved in that mess. Somehow, a simple investigation turned into fifty-odd people trapped in hell together. Tera crystals, extradimensional beings, tera crystals, and a monster that sounds a whole lot like a paradox Ursaluna. It’s insanity. It exists outside of common sense. Given everything he knows, it’s perfectly plausible.[break][break]
He wishes he’d been there. Vanilla Kingsley, Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki, and the rest almost met their makers. Having peered beyond the veil, he prays they won’t see what he saw for a good long while. At least this guy’s strong. Strong enough to keep aliens off the kids.[break][break]
“Heard about it.” He admits. “Sounds insane. You guys hijacked a spaceship to escape? I hear that part right?” It brings back memories of Kyle and his big shot friends launching a rescue mission into Ultra Space. Having been a little high and a lot drunk at the time Kyle shared the story, the details are foggy.[break][break]
Luckily, there’s threats to distract him from walking down memory lane. A particularly bold gastly materializes in front of them, shrieking a challenge. Before Navy can so much as raise a hand to defend himself, Hattori appears in the ghost’s shadow. His stunted Greninja plunges a kunai into the gaseous orb, knocking it out cold.[break][break]
Well…[break][break]
He hopes it’s only knocked out.[break][break]
“The ghost infestation’s been pretty bad since April.” The sheriff adds idly.

"Well, it looked like a spaceship." You answer, the smile falling away from your face. "The whole thing vanished the moment we landed, though. No signs of all that had happened back under the swamp, either. If I didn't know any better, I'd say that the League was covering the whole thing up..."

A pause. You glance over to the sheriff, raising an eyebrow.

"...You guys aren't covering it up, are you? Because if you are--"

You're interrupted by a Shuppet phasing through the floor, rising up to try and Astonish you. He doesn't make that far, though, as Basculegion bursts out of the water, fangs ready to Crunch. That's enough to scare away the measly spectre, who quickly retreats back down beneath deck. Thus, the fish quickly swims through the air and splashes back to the sea, leaving no evidence that anything even happened, save for a smear of ectoplasm that the ghost left behind.

"Seems like it." You shrug, walking over to catch up with Navy. Not that you're afraid of a few ghosts or ghouls, but there's strength in numbers and all that. "Can't really say I'm surprised, though. Shit's been rough over the past few months... Say, if you die and end up coming back as a Ghost type, which one would you want to be?"

“Annilhilape.” The sheriff doesn’t take long to ponder that. “Easy. Don’t know if it works that way.” Would he have to reincarnate as a Primeape first and die? He’s already died once. He felt his spirit slip. Maybe some part of him did slip away in that moment. Maybe there’s a ghost out there some where that was once him.[break][break]
Suddenly, an idle question turns to philosophical pondering. Existential dread. All the other crap that comes with being forty-something in spirit. Looking to the man who’s forty-something in fact, Navy tries to shrug off the intrusive thoughts.[break][break]
“Honestly, can’t really say if they’re covering it up or not. A lot’s been going on just in my little part of Hoenn. There’s dead thi- zombies coming up from the Ultra Deep Sea. Not ghosts. Dead Pokemon covered in barnacles and other stuff. Some of those aliens set up shop in town too, and I had to run them out. I didn’t cover it up, but I don’t really talk about it.” Which has more to do with him moving from one problem to another without stopping to rest, but that would be telling.[break][break]
“Huh.” Looking up at the sky with a stoic jaw set straight, he notices dark clouds. “Thought the weather was supposed to be pretty today.” Something sits uneasy in his stomach. The water all around the research station starts to bubble.

Huh. You would've never took Navy for an Annihilape. You'd have thought he'd choose something more like the Ceruledge that he'd brought with him today. Though, if you think about it a little more... Yeah, Annihilape makes sense. He likes fighting, after all, and that thing's at least half fighting. What with the other half being ghost, you suppose the math checks out.

"Good pick. Personally, though, I think I'd go with Mimikyu." You muse aloud, stroking your chin as you ponder the question over. Sure, it seems like a weird pick at first, but women go fucking crazy for those miserable little bastards, so it's hardly the worst choice in the world. "Failing that, Rotom? Or Skeledirge, or Drifloon, maybe... I don't know, guess I'm not really picky. As long as it doesn't end up being a Gholdengho, I'll be happy."

Whatever wave of dread settles in Navy just washes over you, probably because you don't think to dig too deeply into it. Still, he moves on pretty quick, and so do you. Next on the topic is Zombie Pokemon, and your reaction to that is maybe a little predictable.

"Sounds fucking sick." You say without a single hint of irony. "Are they catchable? Not saying that I'm interesting, but I'm not not interested, if you..."

You trail off as something wet hits your face. Immediately, you assume it's bird shit, and your face wrinkles, but as you go to wipe it off, it turns out to just be water. Rain? No, that couldn't be right. It was supposed to be clear skies and calm waters all day! Hell, that's half the reason you even agreed to come out. Just your luck, huh? You'd say it couldn't get any worse, but knowing your luck, you'd end up getting attacked by a Wailord or something.

CRASH! The entirety of Sea Mauville shakes, and the water around it begins to roil. No fucking way. Surely, you didn't just will that into existence? You hurry over to the railing, peering down to the sea below, and laying eyes upon the looming shadow upon the water. Your eyes go wide, and then, they narrow.

"Fucking hell, what kind of Wailord is that?"
